Guided walks for 2025

Blanket Bog

The Caithness and Sutherland Blanket Bog, known as the Flow Country, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site! I spent 8 years working for the RSPB at Forsinard, and with its fine infrastructure of peatland trail and observation tower, I could think of nowhere finer than there to talk about this wonderful area. Will do these walks on the first and third Wednesday of each month, in the evening, 1800-2000, April-September. And on the first and third Saturdays, 1430-1630. £10. This fits in with train times, so why not experience a ride on the Far North Line and enjoy the spectacular Flow Country scenery!

Special birds

Anything you're particularly keen to see? Waders, divers, ducks? Try me.

Seabirds

This is an adventure!  A trek to the superb Red Point Coast SSSI to admire the tremendous seabird colony found there. More than 1% of the UK’s Guillemots nest on that section of cliff! It’s quite a strenuous walk, across moor and bog, 2 miles or so each way, but it is so worth the effort. Fulmar, Kittiwake, Shag, Razorbill, Black Guillemot and… Puffins. Sea Eagle and Peregrine too, if we’re lucky. The cliff flowers are really spectacular too. Every Thursday, 1100-1500. £15 per adult. I spent 9 years as Warden on a seabird island nature reserve and I retain a special interest in this subject.

World Trail Day 2025.

Join me at Forsinard on 7 June for a walk on the peatlands trail. Just one mile in length, on boardwalk and flagstone, it's suitable for most, if not all!

Rare plants

The area is of particular interest for its bog flora, of course, but in addition, it is renowned for mountain plants growing down near sea level! See my photo galleries for some ideas. I've not set any dates for excursions, but if there's anything you'd like to see, please get in touch.
